Spirits

"Every creature is inhabited by a spirit that makes them who they are. When a creature is born, so is a spirit. When a creature dies, it's spirit is released from the world to rest. The spirit of a creature is essentially who they are. Without a zombie, any creature would simply be a mindless beast.

On rare occasions, if a creature's will to live is so overbearing or if it feels it's duty in the world is incomplete, when it dies, it's spirit will remain amongst our world. It will wander throughout the world until it can finally be at peace. These spirits can remain in the world for hundreds of years and forever be trapped in restlessness, or go to rest in a matter of days.

Spirits have no physical form, but can appear as illusions to those still in the living realm. Most often, they take the image of their former body, most likely in the prime of their life. Even in this form, they cannot feel or touch anything and are only able to watch the world move on around them. They are capable of communicating through illusions and dreams. Spirits can directly communicate only with those with strong spiritual awareness.

The only known way to bring a spirit back into the living world with a physical form is to use undead magic to revive the body that once belonged to the spirit. This process is very risky, for the spirit may not always return to it's former body, resulting in the creation of a mindless zombie. Most often, it is the spirits that wander the world that do not return, unless their body is nearby. Spirits that have moved on will sense the life and return should they want to. It must be noted though, that spirits cannot stay in a body that did not originally belong to them.

There are two ways to get rid of a restless spirit. The first is to listen to them and find a way to bring them the peace they didn't have when they died- and sometimes this is impossible for they may have been wandering far too long for peace to ever fall upon them. The second is to destroy them through some sort of powerful magic. The latter makes it impossible for the spirit to ever return for it permanently destroys the very existence of the spirit.

Spirits, more often than not, have many tales to be told, and if one listens close enough, they shall hear the tale. It is worth one's time to interpret the signs by spirits, for they may contain history or secrets that have been long lost over the years.
